Key Stage 1 (years 1 and 2)

Learning in Key Stage 1 (Y1 and Y2)

In Key Stage 1 we build on the skills that have been developed during the child's time in Early Years Foundation Stage. Throughout the year we teach the core subjects of English, Maths, Science, Computing and Religious Education (RE). The foundation subjects; Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE), Physical Education (PE) and British Values are taught alongside the core subjects.

Where possible, subjects are taught as themes under our rolling programme of topics. This approach links together key areas of knowledge, understanding and skills within a relevant and purposeful context. Subjects are taught under a progressive programme of subject-specific knowledge (key facts), vocabulary, key concepts and skills .

Our curriculum promotes tolerance of and respect for people of all faiths, cultures and lifestyles and we follow the Warwickshire Agreed Syllabus for R.E. as well as 'Understanding Christianity'. We actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect.

We make good use of the different environments around our school to make learning exciting and stimulating. Our pupils experiences are also enhanced by the educational visits that take place throughout the year and KS1 children's participation in Forest School.

Across the school we foster a love of reading and our pupils are encouraged to read a range of books from an early age. We have developed a progressive Reading scheme based on book band colours - Lilac to Black(onyx) - which include Oxford Reading Tree, Big Cat and other reputable publishers.

Phonics is taught daily within EYFS/KS1. Children are taught in groups based on the learning needs of pupils.

Pupils receive a small amount of homework each week.  Reading books are sent home daily. Spellings and basic number facts are expected to be practised at home as well as school.
