Key Stage 1 - Oak Class

Welcome to Oak Class

Welcome to Oak Class

In Oak Class, you will find Mrs. Kent, Ms. Andrews, and Ms. Catterall, together with our wonderful Year 1 and Year 2 children.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the school – we are always happy to help.

What’s Happening in Oak Class?

Reading

  • Every day, your child will bring home two reading books and a yellow reading diary.
  • Year 1 children will have:
    • A Little Wandle book that links to the phonics they are learning in class.
    • A colour-banded book they have chosen themselves, which they should be able to read mostly independently with just a little support.
  • Year 2 children will bring home two colour-banded books matched to their reading level.
  • Please enjoy sharing these books with your child and make reading a regular part of your routine.
  • Don’t forget to record when you read together in the yellow diary – even a quick set of initials is really helpful, as it lets us know when books are ready to be changed.

Spellings

  • New spellings are sent home every Friday.
  • Each week, the list focuses on a particular spelling pattern (e.g. oy: toy, boy, joy).
  • Please encourage your child to practise and talk about the pattern.
  • Spelling folders should be returned every Friday so new spellings can be added after the check.

Home Learning

  • Home learning is sent home on Friday afternoons and should be returned by Wednesday.
  • Tasks are usually short English or Maths activities that children should be able to complete independently.
  • Please support your child with regular home learning but encourage them to do the work themselves.

Home Learning Club

  • Held every Monday lunchtime.
  • Children may attend to finish homework or practise spellings.
  • If your child finds home learning or reading at home challenging, they may be invited to join.
  • Parents are welcome to speak to us if they feel their child would benefit from attending.

Physical Education

  • PE takes place on Mondays and Fridays.
  • Please ensure your child has their full kit in school: white t-shirt, black shorts, and trainers or black pumps.
  • Kits are sent home at the end of each half term (or sooner if needed) for washing.
  • All items must be clearly labelled.

Forest School

  • Forest School takes place on Mondays (dates are shared on ClassDojo).
  • Children need a pair of named wellingtons in school, plus Forest School kit if possible.

Phonics Screening Check

This takes place in June and for most children, when they are in Year 1. Information for parents and carers can be found here: Phonics screening check: information for parents.

Daily Essentials

To help your child be ready for every school day, please make sure they bring the following items:

  • Book Bag – Book bags should come to school every day so that reading books, diaries, and letters can travel safely between home and school.
  • Water Bottle – A clearly named water bottle should be brought in daily. To avoid spillages, please keep it separate from book bags. Children are encouraged to drink regularly throughout the day, and we ask that bottles are filled with water only, as this is the healthiest choice for teeth.
  • Healthy Snack – We ask that children bring a healthy snack for break time, such as fruit or vegetables.
  • Lunch Box – If your child brings a packed lunch, please ensure it contains a balanced meal to keep them fuelled and ready to learn throughout the day.
